NSW: Commissioner must come from outside police ranks: Rev Crews
A churchman is calling for the next New South Wales's police commissioner to come fromwithin state's police service if corruption is to be stamped out.
Uniting Church Reverend BILL CREWS gave evidence at the Woods Royal Commission on policecorruption.
He says a succession of independent commissioners is needed over the next 10-15 yearsbecause there is such an old boys network in the police system it's difficult for anybodynot to be compromised somehow.
Reverend CREWS says in a letter to the Sydney Morning Herald that corruption has onlybeen driven underground under Police Commissioner PETER RYAN, who resigned last week.
He says we must never forget that some of the best drug-smuggling rings the world hasseen were comprised entirely of New South Wales police, and they cannot all have beenweeded out.
Reverend CREWS says police officers should be subjected to covert bugging operations, like the controversial one carried out on more than 100 officers during the Sydney Olympics.
