SYDNEY, Aug 8 AAP - Main stories in ABC's World Today
* Australian interest rates have been set at their highest level in 10 years. Householders
who borrowed when interest rates were low will be among the most affected.
* There have now been five interest rate rises since the 2004 election campaign in
which Prime Minister John Howard promised rates would remain low. It will put more stress
on voters in marginal areas, making the government's pitch for victory this year harder.
* Opposition Leader Kevin Rudd has today said the rise adds to growing household costs
including petrol and groceries. Mr Rudd says the rise will impact practically all homeowners
and that the prime minister is losing touch with working families.
