Antares Alliance Group Selects Summit Software as Premier Support Agent for Microsoft VBA Licensing Agreement.

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 10, 1997--VBITS

New EdgeworX(TM) Release Candidate 3.0 Features

Full Integration of VBA

Antares Alliance Group and Summit Software Company today announced an agreement that names Summit as the marketing and technical support partner for Antares Alliance's licensing of Microsoft's (NASDAQ: MSFT) Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). Under the agreement, Summit will provide support to Antares Alliance for EdgeworX, the first object-oriented Web development and execution framework based on Microsoft's DCOM and VBA. In addition, Antares Alliance Group today announced significant enhancements to today's EdgeworX release. Release Candidate 3.0 includes complete integration of VBA and the ability for developers to more easily execute and store newly created user-defined objects. Release Candidate 3.0 can be accessed from the EdgeworX Web site at www.edgesite.com .

Through use of Summit's premier support services, Antares Alliance will be able to tap Summit's long experience in supporting embedded BASIC scripting engines and development environments. Antares Alliance will also leverage Summit's co-marketing programs with Microsoft to maximize exposure of EdgeworX to key audiences. With the integration of VBA, EdgeworX becomes a customizable Web development framework immediately accessible to the three million developers using Visual Basic.

"Through our partnership with Summit Software, we will be the first VBA licensee to provide Visual Basic developers with a powerful, yet easy-to-use framework for delivering dynamic Web applications," said Olivier Thierry, vice president and general manager of Antares Alliance Group's Internet Line of Business. "In a short time, Summit has established themselves as the premier licensing agent of VBA due to their experience developing, marketing and supporting their own BasicScript SDK product."

"We are excited to partner with Antares Alliance Group and provide our comprehensive services to the EdgeworX marketing and development teams," said Bill Fisher, president of Summit Software. "Our extensive experience in the BasicScript area is keenly aligned with the VBA integration process, allowing us to greatly improve EdgeworX's time to market in advance of the competition. We are committed to Antares Alliance to reach this goal."

"Antares Alliance Group has quickly established itself as one of our most aggressive VBA licensing partners, and is leading the charge with VBA integration into its EdgeworX product," said Tom Button, director of the development tools division at Microsoft. "We strongly support Antares Alliance Group's VBA initiative and see EdgeworX as a tool that will greatly improve productivity across corporate enterprises."

EdgeworX: A Framework for Building Dynamic Web Applications

Microsoft's VBA is integrated directly into EdgeworX's development and execution environments allowing Visual Basic developers to leverage their existing skill sets to build powerful Web applications. EdgeworX's object-oriented execution engine implements Web applications dynamically as a collection of runtime DCOM objects. This unique server-side implementation enables Web applications to be executed as persistent objects capable of generating straight HTML or incorporating client-side component connectivity. For a single execution engine/single development machine, the Developer Edition Kit will have commercial availability in early April. The EdgeworX Workgroup Series will be available in the second quarter.

EdgeworX is a standards-based framework that allows developers to quickly build and deploy highly-interactive Web applications. At the heart of the EdgeworX framework is EdgeCOM, a class library of DCOM objects representing the basic components of a Web application. The EdgeworX developer focuses on defining the application structure and the properties of the individual objects rather than on writing HTML and CGI. EdgeworX incorporates cross-functionality with Microsoft Office, ODBC data access and dozens of other applications from Microsoft and third party software vendors via ActiveX technology.
